Phoenix looked at his friend "well, if you ever do want to talk about it, you're welcome to come and find me, okay?" he smiled and then continued eating. He found the coffee and food here much to his liking, it was cheap enough for him to afford and it was good. There was a lovely view through the windows too.

Edgeworth didn't look down at his food again just yet, his silver eyes were locked on Phoenix, gauging his mood. The view of his friend all decrepit and filled with sorrow still stuck in his mind like static, he was watching for any sign that the apparent happiness Phoenix had re-discovered was a sham.

Phoenix paused and looked up as he found Edgeworth was looking at him, he smiled, not sure what Edgeworth might be thinking about. "is something on your mind?" he asked, curious "or are you just looking in this general direction"

Edgeworth let a little bit of colour leak into his expression then, breaking the eye contact for a moment. "I'm..." He sighed, realising he was about to disclose some very personal feelings to the former defense attorney, "Glad to see you smiling again, Wright."

Phoenix laughed "well I have to say that I'm glad to hear that" he replied, looking at his friend with a surprised look. "but I have to ask, why is that?"

Edgeworth clutched his arm for a moment before sighing again. "When we were children..." He began softly, "You were always smiling. It made each day that much brighter." He shrugged, continuing to dodge Phoenix's gaze as he took a bite of his sandwich, "You smile even when things are tough... to see you not smiling makes everything seem awfully helpless."

Phoenix paused, staring at his childhood friend for a while before he turned his gaze to the table in front of him. "You...really think that...?" he asked, sitting dead still "I never knew...I'm sorry if I worried you at all..." he said, leaning on the table and clasping his hands together in front of him.

"I suppose it's fair, Wright." Edgeworth said with the tiniest of smiles, "I did the same to you after all."

Phoenix looked up, smiling "well, I suppose there is that to it..." he said. He would have said more but he couldn't find anything more to speak about.

Several months passed and everything seemed to be slipping back into normality. Phoenix had come bounding into his office a few days after their impromptu lunch to show off his shiney defense attorneys badge that once more shone proudly upon his lapel. it had been hard work for Miles to hide his joy when they went out that night to celebrate, himself, Phoenix, Trucy, Apollo, Maya, Pearl, Gumshoe and a couple of others. They'd had a few cases together, and Edgeworth still enjoyed the adrenalin thrill he got when battling with the wit that was Phoenix's specialty.
Now though, they were both having some down time, or at least Phoenix was taking no cases and all of Edgeworth's were low key investigations. After his last trial, Edgeworth felt he deserved a bit of rest, it had been a highly controversial issue. When he realised he'd started day dreaming, Edgeworth pushed himself out of his comfortable leather desk chair and stood, moving over to his massive window, peering out over his city-scape view from nine floors up. "His fingerprints were on the safe.... but hers were on the combination lock... so who cracked the safe after all?" He mused to himself, taking a sip from the tea cup he held.

The footsteps made no sound, the practiced step of a professional sneaker. He stepped in behind the pink-clad prosecutor that stood alone in the room, slipping the gun from his jacket. The pistol clicked as it touched the man's shoulder, the words slow and quiet "Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth...a pleasure to finally meet you face-to-face..." DeKiller said, pulling the pistol back enough to allow the Prosecutor to turn "I should like to see my victim's face before he lies dead at my feet" he requested, in an eloquent yet frighteningly deceitful tone.

Edgeworth had remained oblivious to the other presence in his office until he felt the cold sting of metal against his shoulder. He went tense, his tea cup poised at his lips as he fought to ignore the cowardice that bled into his heart. Slowly, he lowered the cup, placing it down on the window sill and slowly turning to face the smooth-voiced man who stood before him.
They wore a suit, no doubt trying to look like they belonged in this building, but the monocle and stitching in the middle of his face was well known to Edgeworth, he'd heard the description from a certain defense attorney during a rather troublesome case a few years ago. "Mr. DeKiller i presume?" Miles asked calmly, swallowing back his fear as he met the assassins eyes squarely with his steely grey ones.

DeKiller bowed in greeting "well guessed," he straightened, the dark eyes not once flicking from the other man "such a respectable man such as yourself, I would have argued deserved a quick and painless death...but I shall apologise that today it shall not be so" the assassin angled his aim away from the Prosecutor's vitals and to a more painful angle. "do you have anything more to say before your death, Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth...?" DeKiller's expression remained hollow the entire time, no mercy nor sign of defaulting on his contract written on his aged face.
On the other side of the door, a figure stood, listening through the door. He recognised the stranger's voice immediately without the need of listening as Miles recited the name. 'DeKiller?!' he would have said aloud but the situation demanded that not a sound escaped his lips. When Shelly recited the final line, Phoenix panicked. Should he get help or waste no time and try to stop DeKiller on his own?

"Just one thing." Edgeworth said, nothing breaking his trademark flawless calm. He would not let this animal see him quiver in fear. He just wished he was closer to his desk so that he could push the panic button on his phone, whether he was shot or not wouldn't matter then, because the security would catch the monster. "Can i know the name of your client? Seeing as i'm to die anyway?" He had no idea that salvation loomed behind the door. It was late in the afternoon, his co-workers would have gone home for the day.

DeKiller shifted his grip on his weapon "I should like to grant such a request, but I am bound to my contract and I have sworn never to utter the name of my client" he replied, now reaching into his jacket to remove his trademark calling-card, upon which was the image of a shell. "It is time, Miles Edgeworth" DeKiller's finger tightened on the trigger "that you should die" At that time Phoenix decided he couldn't sit by and wait for Miles to be killed, he raced into the room, shoving Edgeworth back as DeKiller pulled the trigger. The bang echoed in the otherwise silent room, the sound inducing a fearful cold in the air to all who might have heard. Phoenix stumbled back as the bullet struck him, before he collapsed to the floor. "..." DeKiller waited not for Miles to order security into the room, escaping through the now wide-open door quickly and disappearing once again into obscurity.
