Edgeworth opened his mouth to give a generic answer like 'oh that's good to hear', but he seemed to double-take when he realised what Phoenix had said.
Exam!?
"You're going for the bar again?" He asked, blinking at Phoenix, trying to hide the satisfaction in his expression.

Phoenix grinned "great guess!" he chuckled, "you were right when you said I belonged in the courtroom. I can't help but be excited about going back again, I've really missed it" he said, smiling happily. He laughed then, before adding "even if I always did go home dog-tired after every case, to a pile of paper-work!"

Maya grinned, almost seeming to forget how excited she was about burgers for a moment, turning her head to look at those in the back seat "I'll be glad to stand in court WITH you again!" she said, bouncing excitedly in her seat "and I'll also be happy to see you go back to what you love doing!" she smiled, looking at Trucy "I bet you're happy too, right?" she asked.
Trucy looked at Maya, put away the cards she was practicing a trick with, and nodded "right! It'll be great to share courtroom stories with you and Dad! wouldn't you agree, Apollo?" she asked, looking towards the drivers seat.

Apollo grunted slightly, a joking expression of disdain on his face.
"I'll never get ANY work with Mr. Wright back on the scene." He joked, keeping his eyes on the road.

Edgeworth tried to control the true extent of his joy that Phoenix was going back in to law, after all, one of the reasons he himself had left the country was because the only endearing factor about this country's judicial system was the level of insanity that entered the court whenever Phoenix was around.
"I'm glad you came to your senses, Wright." He settled for, turning his gaze out the window, "You were a shocking pianist."

Apollo couldn't stop himself from bursting into laughter following the Prosecutor's jibe.

Phoenix offered and embarrassed laugh when Edgeworth said this...and Apollo laughed. Maya's reaction? a half-muffled, badly-hidden snicker. As for Trucy she giggled and petted her father's shoulder "awww, Mr. Edgeworth and Apollo are so MEAN to you aren't they?"
Phoenix smiled and lifted his hand to ruffle her hair (she'd removed her hat in order to get in the car) she squeaked a short laugh then batted his hand away. "no worries, I think I'm about used to Edgeworth's cruel sense of humor." he chuckled, looking back at Edgeworth. "I think you personally wanted me back on the job JUST so you could face me again...though I'll never understand it, it's obvious you enjoy watching me lose my patience whenever you come up with something I wasn't expecting and completely throw me off...you seem to...sadistically enjoy my frustration" he laughed, making his own jibe at the prosecutor.

Trucy gasped melodramatically "Mr. Edgeworth is a sadist!? oh no! we'll have to do something about thaat~!" she joked, making a scolding motion with her hand. "do you really find pleasure in watching people squirm when they're losing? I think Dad's exaggerating things a bit" she asked, toying with one of the tassels on her coat.
Maya shrugged "ooh, I don't know he does get that evil half-grin half-glare whenever Nick falls behind" she snickered. "he's EVIL sometimes, but that's not so common now, right Mr. Edgeworth?"

Edgeworth wasn't very comfortable with himself being the center of their conversation, but he knew it was no use trying to steer it in a different direction when this lot were involved.
"I do not enjoy watching people squirm." He defended pompously, re-adjusting the glasses that rested on the bridge of his nose. "Wright on the other hand is..." He paused, seeming a little embarrassed about admitting this, "Wright is quite amusing when he's flustered... and your turnabouts were always more extraordinary when you were beaten to a pulp beforehand..." A strange smile crossed Edgeworth's face, but it could only be seen in the half-reflection his face cast on the window in the dark light of the car.

The expression began to fade though, and Edgeworth kept his gaze pinned to the world that flashed beyond the tinted glass. He would never admit that the REAL reason he wanted Phoenix to return to the court was because the colour had left that world for him with Wright gone. Edgeworth had improved a lot since his days as the renowned 'demon prosecutor', a period of time where he'd felt the lowest of the low and existed in a dark, nightmare filled world where he thought he'd murdered his own father. He'd never expected a long-lost childhood friend to walk back into his life and bring light to his darkness, waking him up to the horrors he'd committed in the name of a cold-hearted perfect record. He'd never forget that.
And though he tried very hard, he couldn't forget the warmth and security he felt knowing he could see Phoenix every day. Even when he'd been in Europe he'd felt comfort reading the newspaper articles that reported Phoenix Wright's billowing success in the court. When they'd stopped, cut off in their prime by an article accusing Phoenix of forgery, Edgeworth had no idea what he was supposed to do.

He took the joking mockery of the young Master of Kurain without a word, he'd been called an evil monster by enough people to be completely desensitized to the whole thing.

If Phoenix had been standing at the time, he might have fallen over at the time. His face flushed bright red "y-you...find my victories...extraordinary...?' he stammered, somewhat shocked to be complimented that his turnabouts were 'extraordinary'...by Edgeworth of all people.
Maya snickered "you look funny when you're embarrassed, Nick!" she said, turning back to Apollo suddenly "c'mon, step on it! BURGER TIME~!!" she demanded, pulling her traditional imitation of a puffer-fish.
Trucy giggled "hear that, Daddy? you amuse Mr. Edgeworth!!" she said, smiling at Phoenix. "oh, and Apollo? I agree with Miss Maya, DRIVE FASTER!!" she complained "I'm tired~!"
Phoenix shook his head, those two girls were almost more than he could handle...almost.

Edgeworth realised that his comment must have sounded like a comment for Phoenix to be reacting to embarrassed. A wry smile crossed his face as he did his usual trick of turning the compliment into an insult.
"After all, only an imbecile like you could pull victories as ABSURD as those out of thin air. Its quite the rare talent."

Apollo barked with laughter again, but it was short lived as Maya and Trucy's nagging finally got under his skin.
"Objection!" He yelled, pounding his fists on the steering wheel, "I am DOING the legal speed limit, i cannot go ANY faster!" He seemed a little flustered.

Maya burst out laughing, both at Edgeworth's insult to Nick's pride and at Apollo, managing to gasp a quick "your objection sounds funny!!" between fits of laughter.
Phoenix flinched at the insult, but knew all too well that Edgeworth would NEVER let a compliment escape his lips.
Trucy giggled, leaning forward "aww, come on, you know that practically NOBODY ever does the speed limit!" she leaned back again and pouted at Maya " well I think that Apollo's Objections sounds COOL!" she retorted, looking at Phoenix "right, Daddy?" Phoenix paused and then nodded.
"uh, yeah...sure" he still did not understand what Maya's obsession with objections was about. Maya huffed, scowling at the girl in the back seat "not as cool as Nick's is!! Nick's objection is only rivalled by Mr. Edgeworth's!" she then grinned "hey! Mr. Edgeworth, please, please, PLEASE show me one of your objections!! PLEASE~!!!" she always loved hearing Phoenix and Edgeworth's 'Objection'...noone really knew why though. ((I will personally admit that they're just that damn cool XD))

Edgeworth seemed to seize up when Maya begged him for his objection. It was ABSURD! That sort of behaviour was only suitable in court, outside of the garden of judgement it just seemed redundant.
"No i don't think that is at all appropriate." He said with a bit of a sniff, "You'll get to see it soon enough when Wright gets his badge." He spared Phoenix a side-long icy glance out of the corner of his glasses.

Apollo felt as though the burger joint that came up on his right had been sent by God. He pulled in to the drive through immediately, praying that a burger was all it would take to keep Maya quiet XD

Maya squealed in delight as Apollo pulled into the drive-thru "WHEEEE!!! BURGER, BURGER, BURGER!!!!" she chanted, clapping her hands, excitedly. "get the BIGGEST ONE they have!!! no no!! TWO OF THEM!!" she chirped, bouncing in her seat in anticipation.
Phoenix shook his head and laughed as Maya squeed over the burgers on the menu. Just like her.
Trucy giggled and snuggled in to her father's shoulder, a happy smile on her face "this was fun! we should ALWAYS go welcome Mr. Edgeworth home in future!" she said. Phoenix smiled, looking down at the girl next to him.
"well, I'm not so sure Miles would be so keen on that..." he said, looking at Edgeworth questioningly. Maya didn't take notice, she was far too busy having some sort of Foodgasm over the thought of burgers.

Edgeworth had sighed in a strange way as Maya started her rant about burgers, her excitement had always been a bit much for him. It wasn't completely an irritated sigh however, there was a strange note of tenderness behind it as he pressed a hand to his forehead. He didn't notice Phoenix looking at him as he stared out the window, lost in his thoughts.
Wright had such a care-free life, with an amusing family and a warm welcoming atmosphere. Edgeworth found his mind wandering back to the cold, dark apartment he would enter, with its wide-screen home theater system and fancy leather couch. He had everything, so why did spending time with Wright and his family make him feel so... lacking?

Apollo sighed too, only his really WAS exasperation. He leaned over and announced his order to the woman in the window, cringing as he handed over the money for it.
"Don't drop it all in the van." He said as they drove to the next window to pick up Maya's order, "Or i'll make YOU clean it."

Maya's eyes widened, both in excitement and awe "ME? DROP part of my BURGER?! never!!!" she said in disbelief.
Phoenix and Trucy laughed, simultaneously, Phoenix then turned back the Edgeworth, snapping his fingers a couple of times "yoohoo! Miiiles~!" he pestered, trying to catch the prosecutor's attention. "hey! anybody in there or is the office closed for the day?" he joked, reaching over and waving a hand in front of Edgeworth's face.
Trucy was puzzled too, Edgeworth seemed quite distracted, "is something wrong, Mr. Edgeworth?" she asked, tilting her head sideways in a curious fashion.

Edgeworth blinked when Phoenix began his rather embarrasing display to try and get his attention.
"Have some dignity, Wright." He said scornfully, though it sounded rather half-hearted. He then turned his icy grey stare on to Trucy as she questioned him. "No Miss Trucy." He replied, keeping it short and simple, "I am simply tired after a long flight."

Apollo tiredly murmured his thanks to the drive-in woman as he took the bag from her and immediately handed it over to Maya.
"Maybe now i can drive home with less back-seating." He mumbled as he started off on their way again.

Maya squeed again, almost snatching the bag from Apollo "THANKYOU!" she said, opening the bag and taking a massive bite out of the first burger. "YUUUMM!!!"

Phoenix frowned "you know, it's not like you to just space out like that" he stated, folding his arms "alright, spill it -what's on your mind, Miles?" he asked, his tone now stern rather than the amused tone it was before. Trucy nodded.
"yeah, no secrets, Mr. Edgeworth! do tell!" she said, looking at him curiously.
"right, no secrets in this family, Edgeworth, now tell me what's bothering you" Phoenix agreed, focusing a blue-eyed stare on the prosecutor.

Edgeworth had opened his mouth to shoot Phoenix down in flames for thinking he'd tell him what was on his mind EVER, but when he said something about family, Edgeworth's voice caught in his throat. He didn't realise that his eyes had widened and his jaw sagged a little in shock until Gumshoe, who'd been sitting silently on Phoenix's other side until now (obviously avoiding saying or doing anything that might further reduce his salary) spoke.
"He's right y'know Mr. Edgeworth. You do seem kinda off today."

Edgeworth blinked once before his customary icy-glare-of-death came over his face. "I'm fairly certain that i'm entitled to silent thought." He snapped, breaking the eye contact and looking back out the window, "Its not as if you're all obligated to know what is going on in my head all the time." He folded his arms, scowling at his reflection in the window. "It's my personal space."

No secrets in this family? Edgeworth thought to himself i awe, He said that as though i were a part of this silly little group he has going... how absurd... Despite the thought train he ran with, part of Edgeworth wanted to believe that Phoenix had knowingly included him in the 'family' equation.
