Zack was already on the phone when Aerith joined them, his face creased with concern. Finally he murmured a word of thanks and hung up.
"The Doctor will be here in an hour or so." He said, turning to face Aerith again, "I'm sorry i left you with this... i got caught up."

Aerith lowered herself into the lounge chair with Ynyr carefully, lying back.
"It's not your fault," she said, securing the little boy against her chest before she closed her eyes again.
"You're here now, that's what matters."

Zack sighed and bounced Ashlynn up and down very gently, kissing her forehead.
"Come on baby, stop crying for daddy." He urged, his pale eyes darkened with worry.

Even with Zack's urging, Ashlynn was showing no sign of calming down. It made Aerith start to panic. Usually Zack had a way with little Ash, as if he were the solution to all her problems.
"Do you think... it's all finally catching up to her?" she whispered.

"No." Zack replied instantly, sounding more desperate than certain. "Not my little girl. Not today or any day." His voice was almost a snarl as he continued to rock Ashlynn back and forth. "The Doctor will get here and he will be able to help her."

Aerith flinched a little at Zack's tone and fell silent for a moment.
"I should have been able to protect her..." she said softly.

Zack turned back to Aerith, a frightened expression on his face. He readjusted Ashlynn who continued to sob, into one arm and sat beside Aerith, putting an arm around her and pulling her close to him.
"This is not your fault Aerith."

Zack squeezed Aerith gently, shaking his head, his heart aching at her tears. She took the blame for his own failure, and he hated to watch her do it.
"Aerith, no one could have stopped Hojo and those men... the entire gang could have been there and he still might have succeeded... this is not your fault."

Aerith held Ynyr close.
"But I was protecting them in the lab... I could have kept protecting them if I was careful. And then Ashlynn wouldn't have had her complications. And maybe she wouldn't be like this now."
She looked up to Zack, teary.
"What if this follows her forever? I don't even know what to do now..."

"Aerith..." Zack mused with a slight growl, but it wasn't an agressive one like he used when angry or in combat. He was cut off though when there was a knock at the door and so he stood to go answer it.
Farvardin leaped onto the couch to fill the space Zack had left, curling in close to Aerith's side.

Aerith wiped her eyes, petting Farvardin briefly, before she bowed her head to kiss Ynyr tenderly, her lips lingering on his forehead for a long time. She could still hear Ashlynn crying as Zack moved to get the door.

Zack had a look of unending patience on his face as he answered the door to find Darts standing there.
"Thankyou for coming so quickly doctor." Zack said, trying to keep the quiver out of his voice.
"That's quite alright Zack." He replied, not even waiting to get in the door before he placed a gentle hand on the baby's tiny forehead. His brow creased and he gestured for Zack to move inside, "She's running a horribly high fever. Let's work on getting that down instead." He said.
Zack moved back into the room where Aerith sat.
"You take it easy love." He said softly, "I've got this."
He then waited as the Doctor unpacked a number of things from his bag and disappeared to the bathroom for a moment before returning with a wet sponge for Ashlynn's head.

Zack looked at Aerith with the expression one would use when chastising a stubborn child.
"Aerith, you've been dealing with this all day while i was at work, take a moment for yourself OK? I got this." He turned back to do as the Doctor was telling him, fussing about with one thing or another.
