The Academy roleplay thread

Set in the distant future.
Humanity has enjoyed years of peace and prosperity, it's the future everyone dreams of, but no one thought we'd ever achieve. Racism and prejudice are all but non-existent and everyone gets to reap the benefits of a booming economy.

Then humanity learned it really wasn't alone in the galaxy. A benevolent race of aliens revealed themselves to humanity, pleading asylum, offering their talents of teaching to the masses, claiming they could help humanity unlock their limitless potential. They came with a warning however, a warning of a far less than friendly race of aliens who had their eyes fixed on galactic conquest, and humanity was one of the final vestiges left in this corner of the universe.

The year was 2132 when they arrived. They touched down simultaneously around the globe, massive silver ships of various shape, size and design. Armies all around the world were mobilized and ready to defend themselves. The humanoid aliens departed their ships they left themselves unarmed wearing only robes and masks that completely covered all of their face except their eyes whichwere covered by one sided tinted glass. They spoke off peace and a warning of an evil race bent on the destruction of all other species.
The aliens asked for refuge on Earth. In exchange the Aliens offered to teach Humans of an ability they possessed. Humans possessed the ability too, but did not know it, so the Aliens began to teach especially gifted people on how to unlock that part of their brain, teaching them of what humans refer to as Magic.
The governments around the world set up academies in which the students could learn, and the aliens could teach in relative quiet.
Six years have past now since the first contact, and humans are doing better than expected on grasping their new gifts, a whole year's worth of students have already graduated, a lot of which also teach.

As the government clamps down to protect the masses from a growing hysteria, can humanity hope to learn all that their new allies have to offer them in time to fight off this new threat?

At this stage we're only offering humans as playable characters. Also, ages should be kept within school-range, though they can be anywhere within that range. You all have to be students at this point.

Heh... I can't say the idea of a school-based rp particularly caught my attention at first, but now I really feel the need to play the really geeky unpopular girl that everyone teases xD

Okay. I'm gonna open profile posting and get this thing started, but first here is a little bit of information on the Magic disciplines.

Illusion: Speaks for itself. The practice of using magic to trick your opponents mind, and somewhat enhance your own. For example, the caster can use Illusion magic to create 'hologram' decoys of themselves, or of anything else the caster may dream up. Illusion is not uncommonly affectionately referred to as Mind Alteration. Illusion can also cast light.

Alteration: The use of magic to alter the world around the caster. For example levitation is a form of alteration as is changing the weight of objects. Casters can also use it to create shields and unlock doors. Alteration is a very malleable discipline as it can be used well in conjunction with other disciplines. For example Alteration is particularly compatible with Alchemy. A caster with both knowledge can change the molecular structure to alter objects to create a new object of similar mass and make-up. Also Elementum and Alteration can create elemental shields, for many effects.

Elementum: The use of the elements of course. Not much needs to be said. It's the main discipline for casters who are being trained for offensive purposes, but is not just an offensive tool. It can be used to create different types of shield, in conjunction with Alteration.

Alchemy: Alchemy as humans know it generally, but with added magic. It also teaches the ability to change the particle make-up of objects to create new objects of similar mass and design, this works with alteration though. Alchemy on it's own is generally the use of magic to fuse two or more things together to create a new item. For instance if one could create weapon materials for soldiers by created alloys from raw material. Much faster than any machine could.

Recropestis: This discipline is really two in one, thought both work in similar, yet opposite ways. Casters learn how to debilitate and 'curse' their opponents. They also use this discipline to heal. This type of magic is very malleable and can be used with almost all other disciplines to achieve many different results. It's up to the caster to figure out how.

Enchantment: Enchantment is the use of magic, usually Elementum, to blend into objects. The classic example of this would be to enchant fire to a blade, or a shield function to an amulet.

In general, characters all have their own focus, but all disciplines are pretty much used together. Mostly anything decent takes years of practice especially when it comes to using magic of a certain discipline with another. So we do not want to see people doing uber stuff. Remember, everyone is still students.

Name: Alister Kane

Age: 17 (Fourth Year)

Gender: Male

Main Magic Discipline: Elementum

Nationality: Irish

Appearance: Alister wears a red hooded jumper, over a black beanie, which he wears most of the time to cover his white hair. Something he is generally ashamed of. He is of average height and slim build. He generally wears Pyrovatex Cotton pants, which are fire resistant. His eyes are a dark green, which he gets teased for a bit too, because of where he is from.

Personality: Alister is seen generally as a loner, not the nerdy kind either, though he does well in his study, especially in Elementum. He is not very friendly, but only because he does not trust anyone, due to the most of the academy looking down on him. But he doesn't mind, he keeps to himself and that suits him just fine.

Brief History: Alister grew up in his homeland until he was 14. Back then he was not as broody. His mother died when he was 12, which was also when the first contact happened. His father raised him for two years, but in that time his father was getting more and more depressed and started losing his mind. When he turned 14 his father was taken to an asylum. While there Alister was randomly selected for an examination, where they discovered he had the prerequisites with which to join the Academy, which was that his mind was able to adapt easily to the teachings of Magic. He did not have anywhere else to go, so he agreed, and so for the last three years he has been studying at the Academy.

Name: Juliet Rossi

Age: 16 (third year)

Gender: Female

Main Magic Discipline: Alteration

Nationality: Italian

Appearance: Juliet is a very fashion loving girl, she makes everything that she wears and plans to be different. She has long curly strawberry blonde hair, although it may change with her fashion. Her favourite clothing to wear is a white laced, long sleeved shirt with pink bows on the wrists. Hip high tartin skirt that reaches mid way down her thigh and skin coloured tights. She has a light brown eyes and is quite small for her age.

Personality: Juliet is very willing to learn and enjoys her time at the Academy very much. She does however like to experiement with her magic and try to find new things she can do. Her mood is always generally happy and adventurous but can get upset easily is overwelmed or yelled at. She loves doing extra activities, she would do all of them if she could. Although she may not be the smartest in the class, she tries hard.

Brief history: Juliet is from Italy but moved with her grandmother to England when she was 4 when her parents needed to travel more for their jobs. She stayed in England until she recieved a request to join the Acadamy. She was homeschooled by her grandmother until this and also enjoyed learning about animals on their farm in the country.

Name: Zack Crusso

Age: 16 (Third Year)

Gender: Male

Magic Discipline: Recropestis

Nationality: Australian

Appearance: Wears a pair of dusty black jeans with a brown studded belt that has an eagle as the buckle. His boots are black, as is his plain sleeveless shirt and leather coat. Zack's not exactly toned, but he's certainly not flimsy in any way. His hair is a standard brown, which is about shoulder length and cared for enough to keep it tidy, and the fringe only just goes over bright blue-grey eyes. He stands at about 6".

Personality: A feircely loyal person, Zack doesn't make friends easily. That's mainly because he rubs people the wrong way, and on purpose. He's a bit of an ass, but he's incredibly loyal to those who are in need of help, or those who are segregated from the main body of the Academy. He has a strong sense of right and wrong, and can always be counted on to do the right thing, even if he complains about it all the time.

Brief History: As the oldest of two brothers with parents who were constantly out at either work or a pub, it was virtually Zack's job to watch his little brother David, who was 9, and also a noble soul. During this time, he'd matured greatly into someone well beyind his age. When Zack was 12, a robber broke and entered the house late at night. Desperate to keep the house and family belongings safe, David lost his life against the robber. Because he was asleep when this happened, Zack was distraught when he discovered what happened, and withdrew into himself. He eventually went into a depression at around the age of 13. Early on in his condition, the Visitors arrived on Earth, and found him on a beach late at night. They found he was within the right mindset to be taught the skills of Magic, and so they took him into the Academy a year later.

Name: Petria Athanasios

Age: 15 (second year)

Gender: Female

Magic Discipline: Alchemy

Nationality: Greek

Appearance: She has the olive skin and the pointed features of a typical Grecian woman, though she is very delicate in frame. She's short for her age, and very fragile looking. She has long free-flowing waved brown hair which she often just ties back at the front, in a 'some-up some-down' style. She favours long flowing dresses with uneven or 'ratty' bottoms, and likes to go without shoes most of the time, though she'll wear a pair of leather sandals whenever required. She has a silver bracelet that twists and turns upon itself - she never takes it off.

Personality: She is particularly quiet and softly spoken. Shy is the correct term for her. She doesn't have many friends (not human ones anyway) and spends most of her time on her own. She's quite studious, but has some doubts about her abilities. She dislikes the idea of conflict completely. She has a particular affinity for plants and flowers, spending as much time as she can in gardens, learning everything she can about the different species.

Brief History: Petria lived on the Greek Island of Mykonos with her family. She had five brothers, and was the only daughter. As such it was her accepted position in life to find a good husband and marry for the benefit of her family. She did not particularly like the role, but she was not the kind to oppose her father or her brothers. A tragic accident saw her nearly lose her own life, while also losing two of her brothers who'd tried to save her. They were exploring a coastal cave when the tide came in unexpectedly. Her brothers helped her escape, but they lost their lives. She was found on the shore and brought the safety by one of the otherworldly visitors who'd recently arrived on earth. The being had explained to her parents that they were looking for gifted children to attend a special school. Her father and all but one of her brothers were particularly vehement about her not going, and forbade it. The being told her that she need only come to the coastline before two days passed and she would be taken to the academy. Her eldest brother helped her sneak out and bid her the best of luck. She is still in contact with that brother, though the two of them were disowned by their father. They still have limited contact with their mother and other brothers.

Ezio: Approved. HOWEVER, (and this is not your fault, it is ours for not explaining) you need to change the reason for your coming to the Academy.
The reason for this is that the Aliens (first contact) are here to GIVE the gift of magic. They do this by teaching humans how to unlock a greater percentage of the brain, therefore granting the possibility of 'magic'. So your character could not have used magic beforehand. Sorry.
It is our fault, so that's why I have approved it, but when you can, please alter it a bit.

Name: Genevieve Pelletier

Age: 15 (third year) _{Don't correct me on the age - she can have a late birthday!!}

Gender: Female

Magic Discipline: Illusion

Nationality: Canadian

Appearance: The best way to describe Genevieve's style is... none. She's probably never owned a single item of make-up in her life and don't even bother to ask her what a curling iron or push-up bra is. Large thick rimmed glasses and messy dark brown bangs hide a pale face and bright green eyes, with her hair usually tied into untidy pigtails or a ponytail. Attire can include - but is not limited to - short denim overalls, tucked in flannel shirts, long socks and knitted vests. It's yet to be seen whether there's a pretty face or a figure underneath the means she uses to hide them.

Personality: Genevieve is quite socially awkward. She doesn't know how to behave around other people or what is the social norm and as a result, is quite isolated from her peers. She's the one who gets pushed into the lockers in the hall, has her lunch stolen and is the butt of the jokes of all of the more socially-ept students. Once easy to upset publicly, Gen has learned to have a thick skin and try not to react to her bullying at the hands of her fellow students. It's always better to get upset later...

Brief History: Genevieve is an only child, home-schooled rather religiously as a child by her College-professor mother, receiving little contact with other children her own age. Her relationship with her parents is rather formal - much to her own chagrin. She excelled academically and displayed signs of higher brain function when tested during her application to begin attending a community high school. As a result, she was contacted by the Academy and instead moved to begin her studies in magic, excelling particularly in the discipline of Illusion.

Or do you mean she is thirteen still but turning 16 later? I'll assume that.

(I mean she's going to turn 16 during the year, but she's born in November or something, so she hasn't had that birthday left. Like being in year eleven, but not having turned 16 yet. So, Gen is in the same year as Juliet, but is younger than her by a few months)

Name: Elliot Damon Frost

Age: 16 (Third year)

Gender: Male

Magic Discipline: Alchemy Major
(Minoring in Alteration)

Nationality: English

Appearance: Athletic build, with a tanned English complexion. 5 foot, 7 inches tall, Elliot isn't the tallest in his age group, but he makes up for it with his stunningly emerald green eye colour and naturally silver hair and an attractive face, he quickly became popular amongst the more boy-crazy girls of the school.

Personality: Kind of shy and a little bit quiet, but naturally out-going when in his element. He's strong of mind, and a bit of a lady-killer (though not horribly so) and he's cautious about friendships and relationships of any variety. Elliot's even-tempered and quite collected, but certain situations can bring out an anger that many people don't expect from this intelligent young man. He's cunning and street-smart, but he doesn't use these elements to prosper, but rather to protect.

Brief History: Elliot's family life was a bit hard at times, given that his father committed suicide when he was 7 years old and his mother was left with three young children and Elliot to raise. Elliot was enrolled in the Academy the year he turned thirteen and quickly discovered that he was talented in the art of Alchemy especially. His three younger siblings needed his help when their mother was at work when he was younger and even now, so sometimes he finds getting all his school-work completed to be tiring, as he ends up regularly pulling all-nighters, to get them done. He tries not to focus on his childhood, because of the hurt it involved, but he mostly keeps an optimistic (if not; cheeky) attitude to the world.
