((The Roleplay is Run by Tidus, direct all questions to him.))
Earth. The year is 2012 on what seemed to be a typical day. The ninth of March. It was a Friday. The Mayan empire believed that the world would end in 2012…they weren’t far off. Time had shown an increase in continental drift among the seven great continents of the Earth as well as the minor islands drifting not far from the greater landmasses. Scientists first noticed the change, and alerted the governments, their colleagues and all who would pay heed. The seven continents were moving closer together, reforming the jigsaw puzzle that was the constant theory of ‘Pangaea’, the greater continent. By the eleventh of July 2012; a Wednesday this time, the continent of Pangaea had formed. Once more, or for the first time, no one knew, but at this time, the irrefutable evidence of a super continent was more than just speculation. However, with this new diversity and less widespread existence, people could now travel any countries borders without even needing a boarding ticket for an airline. People were joining with family they had not seen in so long, and a quiet happiness prospered for a while.
September came. By the fourteenth of September, (Another Friday) the brief happiness had dwindled. New rumours ran riot. Rumours of such insanity, that many people dared not to believe them.
Two new super continents had formed. Parallel, to one another, and Pangaea. Global satellites told the people of Pangaea this. But they weren’t the real problem for the people of Earth.
Rumours of dangerously fierce creatures, that were supposedly roaming free in the wilds, uninhabited by man; had been laying claim to countless deaths, of any who strayed from safety. These were the rumours spreading. How they spread, no one could answer. But many claimed to have seen horrible demons, terrifying ghouls and soulless monsters, committing atrocities not comprehendible by man. Nothing was sacred.
Two weeks later, on the twenty-eighth, news crews received live video streams of these inhuman monsters tearing apart men who didn’t get to safety quickly enough. These demons and monsters…had reached civilisation. More irrefutable evidence for the masses to cling to, to realise what was happening in their world.
Was this a plague? No. It was worse.
Irrationality ran rampant. People with obscured minds and tortured visions began to commit suicide at a greater rate than ever before, masochists and sadists, feared for their lives –for the first time ever in their lives– and the people who lived in comatose states began to wake at astounding rates, screaming with fear and mortification. The sane felt shocked and terrified. The world was turning into a living hell. Or worse.
Soon enough, there were warning broadcasts when creatures had been spotted in your area, warning you not to go out. The television, radio, every broadcasting equipment type was receiving these reports regularly. After a short period of time, however, those old enough to remember began to recognise certain creatures being spotted. Young adults flipped through strategy guides, went and played old games and did who knows what else, but they found out where they were coming from.
Adults aged between 18 and 25 came to the conclusion, and in turn took their findings to the news stations, to show them, to prove it to them. After speaking with the directors, they received a block on a broadcast time on all networks simultaneously. It was to be a live broadcast. To benefit the super continents people in their entirety.
“A group of us recognised these creatures from a variety of different things. I for one, recognised this one here,” one spoke, pointing to wolfish creature, with two protruding horns, raking forward from its back, “from many a game by Square Enix. They referred to it as a Dual Horn in English translation. While Tom here,” he stopped, as a man stepped forward and spoke himself.
“I recognised this one here,” he pointed to a creature much in resemblance to the Grim Reaper, coloured red, “from Devil May Cry 3. A demon called the 7th Hell: Lust.”
Another stepped up, and announced another creature. “I know this thing from The Legend of Dragoon. In the game, it’s called Piton.” And he pointed to a bird-like creature roughly twenty-five feet long composed entirely of flame.
The original speaker returned to the front and a slideshow of the monsters spotted, and the pictures of the creatures from many a game, anime or movie title, were shown behind them.
“This should be the evidence needed to prove that these monsters aren’t just demonic. They downright shouldn’t exist. But these games have come to reality. This could be the dawning of our apocalypse. None of this is right. But it’s all happening. The games have become real.”
For a time, no one believed them, pretending they’d gone insane from the fear. But it was their own paralysing fears that kept the truth from their own eyes.
The eighteenth of October 2012 saw the rise of many companies making the same announcement.
“Yes, those young adults were correct. The monsters from our games have come to life. We’re not sure how it is, but they have. For the past two months, we’ve worked in secret, attempting to forge enough to keep our peoples safe. And somehow, to some extent, we’ve succeeded. We’ve managed to forge weapons from these games, and armours and who knows what else we can accomplish, but with this new level of chaos, it seems a lot is possible, where it shouldn’t be.” The spokesmen unveiled a table and wall, stocked to the tee with weapons, armours and vials.
“We’ve come up with a means to combat these atrocities, but we can’t do it without assistance. With the Pangaean government’s permission, and through their authority, we have arranged ‘task forces’ and applications to participate in these forces operations are open to all capable.”
It was a public display of courageousness. Or misplaced bravery that they could comfortably show off these weapons when, whilst they might be the only ways to kill the monsters, it was insane.
December seventh, 2012; all concessions about the existence of the creatures had been made along with many treaties among institutions, workshops and companies in order to actively increase trade and work designated globally towards the defence act, worked hard to draw power to the act and all those to get involved. By this stage, a permanent state of emergency was active; everyone had to be alert at all times, day by day.
The next day, a spokesman for the GDS (Guardian Defence Sector) announced all alliances, and an exceptionally well forged selection of duplicate armaments of all varieties to be completed. The teams that would soon embark on their perilous journeys to slay as much as possible that threatened the people, would soon begin to form out of people who would apply. But something no one expected also came to be.
“It is my great pleasure to, along with the weaponry and armours forged, we have somehow also managed to replicate the evolutionary means oft found in these video games. We have tested these products, and discovered that the uses they pose to us here and now, are very similar to the uses they served in their actual title. For example, we have replicated the Sphere Grid out of Final Fantasy ten, along with the Licensing Boards of Final Fantasy twelve and others, like the Junction system of Final Fantasy eight and the evolving pins of The World Ends With You, along with many, many more. It is to our understanding, that by having these available, you will, once you’ve strengthened, find yourselves ten times as capable as any mere mortal. The power they can give to any person might just be the difference between survival, and destruction.”
From here, details about the participation were further expanded upon, declaring that each participant would be given a starting rank of ‘H’ that would then, as victories over targets were obtained, begin to increase to a final rank of ‘Super S++’, the highest achievable to prove one’s mettle. Payments would increase for higher ranking assignments and the minimum payout for a successful hunt would be fifteen thousand GC (Global Currency) increasing to a maximum of one million GC at the SS++ ranking. By becoming a hunter, or a guardian, one’s titles were edited to show one’s involvement in the protection of the Pangaean life.
Guardianship itself is acutely different to that of a Hunter, as Guardians, whilst paid more at ‘H’ ranking (receiving twenty thousand GC), received slightly more complicated jobs than Hunters. Guardians are as they are named: guards. The Guardians job requires them to guard any number of things, ranging from their client to an important cargo or even food supply trains moving between towns. A Guardian can take on Hunter jobs, whilst a Hunter can also take on Guardian jobs, however one’s rank in the other position does not pass over to the other, thus beginning at H rank on the other, despite their rank on the opposite. Also, with the Guardian post, comes a lot more secrecy and a higher need for really strong subjects to take these roles. Guardians are intolerable of weakness due to the intense strain their jobs may encompass.
However, as with all new advancements, there was a hefty price. In this case, the highest price to pay is one’s life. The struggles to be faced by Guardians and Hunters alike could leave them injured or casualties. And so the representatives made extra point of this, and suggested that if you are afraid to lose your life, do not offer yourself to the cause.
In the coming few weeks, hundreds of thousands recruited themselves to the cause. In a variety of different ways; frontal application, conscription, peer pressure and many others. Those that were conscripted were soldiers, who were supposedly ready to give their lives on the front lines. Quite a few were too terrified to go into this new line. But could they be blamed?
The storehouses thrived with endless supplies of weapons, armours and little vials of who-knew-what. Weapons from the basic dagger and sword to the intricately carved Brotherhood sword from Final Fantasy X and the Agito+ from Monster Hunter, along with many other weapons, inferior and superior. If you could think of any weapon or armament from any game, you’d find the staff bringing it to you, if your rank matched the equipment. In the cases of armour, low class one’s, such as the Metal Shield and the simple breastplate were accessible to H rank, whilst armours such as Legend Casque, Phantom Shield and the Atlas Targe accessible to ranks above S.
They would only let Hunters take armour and weapons matching their rank, and even then, not much. Only what would be able to get the hunter through enough to earn themselves some money to buy better equips later. As for Guardians, the government and companies were slightly less strict, as it was to be them protecting their arses if they ever found themselves in real danger.
In the light of the vials of who-knew-what, the healing potions, and the attacking items were a lot less strictly maintained for both Hunters and Guardians alike. All in the hope of keeping as many people alive as possible. However, while the limit is far less strict, there is still a limit. Hunters are given ten Potions, three Hi-Potions and five each of three different attack items, whilst taking five of each of the status ailment removers, bar remedy. Guardians are given twenty percent more than the Hunters for their client’s sake, than their own.
And after all this, the applicants are moved onto by far the most important aspect of the lifestyle they are about to undertake: evolutionary pathway. The evolutionary pathway criterion however, involves an injection to magnify and activate all changes in ‘stat boosts’ from the customisation the user selects. Whether it’s one, or several, or even a mixture of multiple. It seemed that a fair few people opted for the “Sphere Grid” taken from Final Fantasy X, as it was a fairly simple method to increase a user’s stats to the limit with the most ease, however time consuming it may be for each person. However, there are many formats on offer, with the Sphere Grid being just one of many. And those that opted for mixtures of evolutionary pathways had various outcomes: superiority…or the ever-unwanted…death. Or, the individual could bypass the evolutionary pathway altogether and find themselves at a complete disadvantage as soon as they progress pass even H ranking, against the weakest of enemies. Normal humans seemed to be at a thorough loss against mildly tougher beasts than we could have hoped.
And with that, a new age and page in the Human Era and history had opened up. One regarding the Apocalypse, or merely another test of human ingenuity. With this, only time would tell.
With this, begins our characters chronicles at the beginning on the second of January; Wednesday. The year is 2013.
